Awesome in a Can
We are well and truly overdue for a Post of Awesome… There is so much internet awesome out there, and so little time to spread the word!! However, as a public service, and as I’m not terribly busy today… here it is… for your reading/viewing/listening pleasure…
Video of Awesome – Gumball Wars – I came across this via Kuriositas a wonderful collection of web curiosities! I love the personality that’s visible in the gumball machines. All created digitially in Maya. So clever, and cute (and, let’s face it, retro… what’s not to love!)
Image of Awesome – Colorful Cosmos I just love the colours and the stunning clarity of this macro shot – a beautiful dandelion, wet with dew. Kind of puts me in mind of the Dr Seuss story about the Whos in Whoville (Horton hears a Who)
Surf’s Up – The Hobbit Blog – As if it wasn’t enough that I’ve got one ‘Nerd Friendly’ entry in this list, here’s another… Oh my… how good is it to keep up to date with what’s happening on the Hobbit set… I was late to any kind of appreciation of the LOTR movies, there’s no way I’m going to be late to this one…
Post of Note – Short Illustrated History of the Nerd – What every nerd adjacent person should know, just in case they get asked… “Muuum… where did I come from?!”
Reading – Gone Tomorrow (Jack Reacher #13). I have been devouring Lee Child’s ‘Jack Reacher’ novels since I came across them, either by solid real life books, audio books or the Kindle… whatever I can lay my hands on. Yes, by the time you get to number 7 or 8, particularly if you read them one after the other, they’re a little formulaic… but OMG… Jack Reacher is the thinking (and seeing) woman’s hero… *swoons*
Listening – The Sowers Group – Cheza (Dance) – [Links to iTunes]. My former singing teacher suggested via facebook that we get a posse together to go hear these guys, and given my propensity to devour any music that sounds remotely African, I leapt at the chance. I was, in no way, disappointed. Yes, they’re a God fearing/promoting band which I’m sure is a little unusual for the Basement – but the music was fantastic, whichever way you hear it, and regardless of your position on ‘faith based’ music they were utterly wonderful and left you wanting more, and wishing you weren’t white and inhibited on the dance floor!
Awesomer
It’s about time there was less Christmas around here and I shared some of the currently awesome stuff I’ve been into of late…
[waits till everyone is up off the floor after the shock of 2 posts in one week...]
Here goes…
Currently Reading: God, Actually: Why God Probably Exists, Why Jesus Was Probably Divine, and Why the ‘Rational’ Objections to Religion are Unconvincing.Ok… yes, this is apparently heavy duty reading, it’s no Marian Keyes’ that’s for sure but it’s interesting. I appear to be surrounded these days by people who have subscribed to the opinions of Dawkins, Hitchens and their ilk, so it seems appropriate to have some kind of alternate explanation for my faith opposed to their atheism. This book is very useful in that regard and isn’t at all preachy or wishy washy.
Currently listening to: Muse: The Resistance. I have such eclectic taste… no, really… classical music at one end and Muse, Silverchair, and Evanescence at the other… Muse is my (I know, I’m late to the party) latest find and it’s been really hard to listen to anything else…
Picture Perfect: The Semeru. Go, lose yourself in this picture. You won’t be sorry.
Video of Awesome: Could have been a Love story. A serious ‘advertisement’ for taking a risk and putting yourself out there… How many of these conversations have you had that you wished you hadn’t? Yeah, me too…
Surf’s Up: An up to date take on the classic Mix Tape. I absolutely love this site, some very funky cool things!!! As I’m an eighties girl I saw these and thought they were absolutely perfect… I remember having a stack of mix tapes of songs I’d recorded from the radio… this is such a cute way to recreate that…
Posts of Note: What Katie Ate – Sydney Food Blogger and stunning photography. Go forth, observe, absorb and drool. Stunning pix and beautiful food, and mostly in Sydney… so completely achievable [snort] at home… (watches the kilos pile back on)…
You’re welcome.
Christmas of Awesome
It’s time now for the inaugural Christmas Post of Awesome just in time for the close of 2010. It’s been an amazing year for me, I’ll post about that in time for the New Year, so for now I thought it fitting to post some links of Christmas Awesome I’ve come across in the last few weeks.
Enjoy! And May you and all your loved ones have a happy and joyful Christmas.
Video of Awesome – Digital Christmas
Quite Possibly what it might be like if the 1st Century story took place in the 21st Century… Christmas 2.0
Post of Note – Santa Tracker
This is the US Military official Santa Tracker – bookmark the page so you can check in on Christmas Even and see just how far around the Globe Santa has to go to get to your place!
Surf’s Up – Advent Calendar
OK, I’ll confess to a shade of self promotion here and point you (if you’ve not already seen it) to the Advent Calendar I trot out every year – I still love it!! It’s becoming a tradition with my Australian Family it’s kinda cute that they get a kick out of it still …
Christmas Cross Stitch Countdown
Listening to – Ultra Lounge, Christmas Cocktails Volume 1.
I really can’t get excited about the cheesy/tired/trite versions of Christmas Carols that get blasted over sound systems in shopping malls, and dang it, even in some churches, every year. I was introduced to Ultra Lounge a few years ago and THIS is my go to Christmas CD, no, not much that’s traditional about it at all and it TOTALLY appeals to my retro loving little heart… check it out, it’s gorgeous!!! Ultra Lounge, Christmas Cocktails Volume 1.
Reading – The Nativity – Luke Chapter 2
I can’t go past this chapter of the Bible at this time of the year; don’t freak out, it won’t kill you to read one chapter just as a reminder of how this whole this Christmas thing got started – it’s in straightforward English too…
Luke Chapter 2, The Message
Image(s) of Awesome – The Big Picture – Beginning to Look a lot like Christmas.
I love the Big Picture, a regularly updated gallery of stunning Pictures – here’s their Christmas 2010 version… Enjoy, and go all the way to the end, that last one’s my favourite The Big Picture – Christmas 2010
Spontaneous O for Awesome
this is GOLD!!!!
Awesome-O
So, having made a promise to myself to blog for the whole of November I begin by taking the path of least resistance and as such shall make this first post a ‘post of awesome’ to get the blog rolling!!!
Surf’s Up at http://www.bodycounters.com/ They are the Bodycounters. They count bodies, so you don’t have to.
The Post of Note goes to Cool Material for this list of historical facebook events. There are a few of these around, but I guess with a Bachelor of Theology under my belt you’ll understand why some of these ones appealed. – http://coolmaterial.com/roundup/if-historical-events-had-facebook-statuses/
I’m currently reading Book Lover as I’m back on the chick lit bandwagon at the moment. It’s going alright though not particularly cleverly written, but for a bit of light reading it’s going quickly enough… I have to finish it so I can get onto the three (THREE!) books I’ve purchased recently…
Some time ago a friend recommended Paul Durham’s band ‘Black Lab’ as worthy of a listen, in fact he gave me one of their cds. This is the latest offering, it’s been a long time in the making and it was worth the wait. Two Strangers by Black Lab
This isn’t particularly funny, but I found it fascinating, even if it is a marketing video for Dominos Pizza. Did you ever think there was THIS much involved in shooting such ads??! Crazy!Pulling the Cheese
The current Photo of Awesome is a stunner and one of those glorious ones that are a once in a lifetime image… The story of the photo is on the site you click through to… I’ve downloaded this one as my current desktop, it’s gorgeous. Moon+Venus+Clouds+Birds=Eyegasm
Made of Awesome
So, I changed the thumbnails over there on the right to reflect the fact that I’m far from posting awesome anywhere close to once a week… Happily I’m sitting in an airport today with little else to do or think about and so I’ll update the links for you!!!
Video: I’m linking to this one, partly because, it’s fantastic – a beautiful love story – and because the people involved are friends of mine!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfZMyHpmhJU4 Kris and Rach are amazing people and their story is challenging and yet amazing as they fight Kris’ cancer together. http://www.triplem.com.au/sydney/shows/grill-team You can also hear them interviewed on local Sydney Radio where the video made the hardmen of the grill team all cry!
Photos: Came across this site http://www.pictorymag.com/showcases/in-deep/ which as some stunning photos… the feature ‘in deep’ is beautiful but also a bunch of other great galleries to check out as well.
Reading: Just finished Chocolat – Loved it but had reverse disappointment that the book wasn’t the same as the movie!! At least not the same as I remember… I may have to watch the movie again just to be sure (who am I kidding, great excuse to see Johnny Depp in action needs no justification)
Listening: I haven’t always been that keen on the offerings of Australian Idol winners but Stan Walker is pretty special… I bought the latest album ‘From the Inside Out‘ and LOVE it.
Surf’s Up: There are some very cool magazine style sites around with fantastic articles. I think I need an iPad to do them justice actually (slowly talking myself into one…) here’s the one I found most interesting recently… ‘Cabinet‘
Post of Note: I just love this story!! It’s a bit long and involved but really cool to hear when the People’s Justice happens in a place like New York!! http://www.whatever-whenever.net/blog/2010/08/justice-in-brooklyn/
Teh Awesome
(dedicated to Kelley who IS teh Awesome in human form)
I seem to be in a peculiar zone where reading material is concerned at the moment. I am still reading Harry Potter but I’ve not been able to stop myself buying books when I see them, so I’m also actually reading Cut & Run: When the Truth is No Protection by Alix Bosco. This is unusual behaviour in that I NEVER start a book till I’ve finished its predecessor. I may need an intervention… because I’ve another new book I bought by accident sitting in the wings waiting for me to finish the Bosco (but I haven’t really started it… well, maybe just a chapter in my lunch break… Oh. Help!)
I’m listening to The Robert Ludlum Value Collection: The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum. Acutally, just the Bourne Identity to start with. Might be a bit daft given how well I know the movies but I’m interested in how much more the books flesh out the stories. When do I have time for this?? While I’m at work… it’s possible to code and listen to stories at the same time… sometimes I lose focus on the reading but the cool thing with audiobooks is that you can go back to wherever you stopped listening at the press of a button! I’m REALLY missing my iPhone at the moment or I could listen to this stuff on the bus! (That’s a story for another day).
Image of the Week for my fellow Gen Xers. Circumstances which dictate when you should ‘Whip It’
Video of the Week – Underwater Sculpture by Jason deCairesTaylor beautiful – if a little disturbing…
Post of Note – John Mayer, on Life – it’s Simple
Surf’s Up – Have I introduced you to Hyberbole and a Half? If not… check out Ally’s blog… in particular, her post about her ‘slightly’ retarded dog…
Awesome Sauce
Reading: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Book 3) I know, I’m a big kid but they’re just so GOOD and it’s been a long time since I read them the first time!!
Video of the Week: BIG BANG BIG BOOM – the new wall-painted animation by BLU
Image of the Week: I’ve never been to Santorini. This makes me want to go REAL bad… Santorini
Surf’s Up: Going To Rain – this is cute – a quick reference as to whether you’ll need your umbrella, wherever you are! Going to Rain?
Post of Note: I honestly don’t how how true these emails of David Thorne’s are but damn they are funny! Missy is Missing
Listening: To the Fall by Beth Anderson [Link to iTunes] Stunning vocals, beautiful melodies and lyrics. Totally worth checking out.
Son of Awesome
Hello from the chill of the Waikato, NZ. This flying visit to celebrate my sister’s 40th was a big surprise to everyone but Lil’ Sis’ and the looks on people’s faces when the penny dropped was priceless!! So glad that I don’t live SO far away that a long weekend home isn’t out of the question… Oh that and ridiculously pleased that the fares were affordable! Thank heaven’s for a competitive market… (but sorry about the carbon footprint…)
I’ve just updated the O for Awesome sidebar – here’s a brief precis of this week’s picks!!
Image of the week is actually a gallery if images I found via Coudal’s Fresh Signals Feed (my no 1 source for things awesome) and just seems to sum up to me the wonder of children’s imaginative play – check out Journey to Everywhere by Jan van Holleben
Surf’s Up is a site called The Creators Project – cool to surf around and see what other creative individuals are getting into!! Some cool music and video and interesting people!
Video of the Week is some ‘tech-cute’ can I get an awwwww? AT-AT Day Afternoon
I’m still reading a Million Miles – but the CD on rotation this week is Technicolor by The Parachute Band. A churchy one for the uninitiated but some very cool stuff if that’s your bent…
Because I’m in NZ I’ve posted http://kiwifruit-the-blog.co.nz/2010/07/a-weekend-of-rellies-and-ralli.html as my featured image – just to give a shout out for one of my longest standing bloggy friends – and the http://sizzlesays.wordpress.com/2010/06/30/i-am/ who had the revelation this week that I hope everyone who’s ever felt small gets sooner rather than later in their life!
Edited to add, I have two lots of featured images – Fi’s who has me all nostalgic for nice wines on her balcony is a bonus!! Have a great week.
Oh for Awesome!
I have a bit of a reputation for finding and passing on interesting and amusing corners of the internet and in this new incarnation of Singular Scene I’ve created a little corner of sharing and discovery! The categories are fairly clear and I hope that as you surf these little treasures you’ll pass them on and share the love!
Oh, and if you find something you think is worth sharing here let me know I’m always keen to find other cool stuff! (And it’s totally cool if the post/image/video submitted is your own handiwork, just make that clear in the submission!)
I’ve identified 6 categories of ‘stuffs’ and here they are with the first week’s picks!
Surf’s Up – websites of note – and this week it’s the Museum of Online Museums a collection curated by Coudal Partners (worth following). I could get completely lost down a rabbit hole of surfing from museum to museum finding more cool stuff to dish up for ‘Surf’s Up’ next week!
Video of the Week – a title with little imagination but a showcase of videos from the imaginations of others… you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll gasp…. this week – best birthday ever!!
Image of the Week – equally imaginative in title – but a feast for the eyes!! This landscape looks painted… amazing
Posts of Note is all about the writing… Blog posts, articles, whatever catches my ‘virtual ear’! Keep updating, you never know when the ‘post of note’ could be one of yours!! This time it’s from the Boston Globe - the ‘right side of wrong’
Listening/Reading – I’m not much of one for writing literary reviews, or music reviews really – I like it, I may hate it but it’s always hard to qualify – these are what I’m listening to – the audiobook version of Girl who Kicked a Hornets’ Nest – and a Million Miles in a Thousand Years. Neither of which I’m deeply into enough to be able to comment… but I have to ask… if I’m listening to a book, am I still reading it???
(I should point out that the listening/reading links go to Amazon and are affiliate links. If you buy these books/cds I get a bit of a commission – not that I’m expecting ever to get anything out of these, but I thought you should know…)
So, like I said. I’m always interested in ‘what’s out there’ If you find anything you think I’d like, I’d love for you to let me know!!
