Footy Fever

February 23, 2006 by

There is a guy in my world who actually goes by the name of “the Saunternator” and he has to be seen to be believed. He can do a Mick Jagger strut and pout that will render you immobile with mirth and not a little afraid of how freaking close it is…He’s loud an proud and completely indifferent to the social niceties of personal space and he’s an ever loving, good old Kiwi boy who loves footy, the real footy, Rugby Union footy. The kind they play in heaven.
It’s the kind of footy I’m a bit fond of too… It’s the Kiwi condition… born and raised steeped in blood, sweat, and the competition of two massive teams fighting for glory and honour. Arrggh arrgh arrgh… Hoo Yah.
Just prior to the beginning of the new Super 14 competition Saunter slings his arm around me at the office and [loudly] invites me to join his tipping competition. You know, the kind of comp where, each week, you pick the teams that are going to win, score points for every win you picked and the odd bonus if you pick a 4 try score. If you’re the biggest scorer by the end of the comp you ‘scoop the pool’ as it were…
Apparently I’m the glamour puss of the comp. Or at least, the only girl…
Anyway [here’s where I get to the point] he also fancies himself of a bit of matchmaker…
And it’s yours truly who he’s currently got in his sights… and so, here I am waiting for the phone call he’s [apparently] setting up…
I could be waiting a while… so until that happens… you can follow Dee’s footy tips if you like…
See Below.

Oooh, with you on all of them but one. The Blues vs Reds. I reckon the Reds might just do ’em – the Blues just haven’t got their s**t together at the moment.
Interesting to see how the Highlanders do, even against the newbie Cheetahs. We just don’t travel well, ‘specially up to the Veld, man.

I’m a Waratahs Gal myself (when I can be bovvered!) Only because my Ewan is named after Ewen McKenzie, the Waratahs coach. My lovely husband met him once at a rugby club do and as Ewan McKenzie played same posi as Craig (tighthead prop) he gushed about him for days, right around the time we were looking for a name for the new baby! I said, “Ooooh, Ewan’s a nice name, isn’t it?” and that day history was made!

I’m in Stormers country (my bro-in-law has been attending the games, actually) and I’m afraid I don’t quite share your enthusiasm for the sport(s). I love you anyway!
Now tell us more about the match-making and not the MATCH making!?!?

Hello Red, so flipping good to hear from you!
Um, there’s nothing to tell yet… I haven’t had a phone call!! Can’t decide whether to be relieved or put out…

Not a sin so much as a "damn tedious waste of an evening"

Unfortunately, the rugby build of bloke is not quite my thing, so Husband could not even sucker me in to watching it with the promise of big, muscular blokes.

Given that my preference is, traditionally, for the taller, slimmer, wirey type, I do ask myself how I ended up with a Welshman of typical rugby build. We may never know.

Btw, he is currently watching the ‘soccer’ type of football. Is that a sin in your book? ;-)

Good to see a female who appreciates the Sport of Thugs. Could you talk to the wife for me and explain its power of attraction?
