Hollywood Has My Number

October 4, 2004 by

It’s true… I can rant and rave till the cows come home about how Hollywood sells the lie that love at first sight is the norm rather than an unusual occurrence, but they got me today….

I just went and saw Wimbeldon.

Loved it…

Think ‘Notting Hill” at the tennis club.

Loved Notting Hill too… and Bridget Jones, and Love Actually…

Love them all. (Love English Love better than American Love actually…)

These movie producers can get away with it because we keep coming back to watch the fairy tales figuring that if it isn’t happening for me, at least it is for someone… even if it is complete rubbish, fiction cleverly painted on celluloid …

Yep… love the love. I have been known to put myself to sleep dreaming of that loaded glance across a crowded room.

Bit of a girl really.

But not an angry young woman… Truth is that, deep down, I believe the love match can and will happen for me. Yet I am not down on myself that it hasn’t.

That’s the thing. The crucial difference… Some people are too busy analysing why it hasn’t happened, expecting the whole Hollywood fairy tale but going to the watching the soppy lurve stories makes them more depressed than they went in!!

I won’t stop, I will shell out the $14.50 to see the first sexually charged glance… the glorious gradual descent towards the monumental crisis … the tragic, devastating break up… the revelation that unless this relationship is saved, the world will end … the final heart stopping reunion and the screen kiss that turns you inside out…

It may or may not be true to life, but while I’m not getting any romancing and kissing, it seems that $14.50 is a small price to pay to at least to live vicarious love life.

You Know You are Working When….

September 18, 2004 by

You don’t have a minute to check or update your blog during office hours… This is a first for me since I started writing it… So local time is 1.15am… I just got home from babysitting!!!

I am pleased to report that after a whole week in the “it” department I consider the leap from one building to the other one of great satisfaction… finally I will be getting paid for actually achieving something… it has been a very long 5 months!!!!!

I am now referred to the web administrator (or spiderwoman…) or ‘the IT girl”. Neither of these are particularly thrilling but affectionately meant I believe… Actually at my request the title was changed to website administrator… sounds preferable to me!

As reported yesterday D – Day has been scheduled for tomorrow. I am actually not feeling terribly stressed about it which is gratifying. I am wondering though if I am the only girl out there who apparently does not place enough gravity on the choice of vestments for such an occasion as a first date, and a blind one at that…

I have a vague idea of what I would wear to this meeting… (a lunch at a local beach side cafe…) casual yet feminie attire… but nothing too thoroughly thought out. Make up? Check! Hand bag? Check! etc. etc. etc – YET
Bliss, Skeeter and Kaffin, all respond to my news that D-Day was set with the question…”What are you going to wear?” Proceeding then to mentally flick through my wardrobe and offer their best suggestions…

What a drama… I do think I need to go shopping and start compiling the summer wardrobe but it makes me wonder what sort of girl I am when clothes aren’t the first thing I think about in any given situation…

The First Day of Anything

September 15, 2004 by

There are landmark days and in my mind they are usually the first of something … and so here is a meditation on the first day …

1. The first day of school – fear
2. The first day of work – independence
3. The first day of piano lessons – failure
4. The first day of your period (sorry boys) – womanhood
5. The first day of Lent – denial
6. The first day of January – discipline
7. The first day of summer – freedom
8. The first day of marriage – bliss
9. The first day of parenthood – joy
10. The first day of church – community

Today was the first day of my new job. It promises much that it has been a long time since I had …

Independent thought
Freedom from oppression
Responsibility without Fear
Respect for my time, my person, my skill & my talent
Appreciation for a job well done

Isn’t it incredible that you can go for 2.8 years without realising what you were missing?…

It’s a new day for me and I couldn’t be more thrilled.
