Uni-Versal Thursdays

March 9, 2006 by

I was almost late again for class… But remembered that Thursday is college day when I walked in the door… Man, just imagine if I was studying at some other campus… I’d have failed for non-attendance…
Fi asked a while back how the studying is going and I haven’t responed… largely due to a distinct lack of time, but to answer her question the response has to be
“Flippin’ awesome.”
I have to apologise that’s this is not a suitably academic description for use by someone studying in a higher education institution… maybe I should have said. The course is progressing very well, thank you, I am enjoying it enormously.
Rolls Eyes…
We had a refresher lecture yesterday concerning how to write for Higher Ed (because, till now, we’ve been a VET course (as in vocational education and training) and the ethos and practise of both is rather different.
The lecturer delivered a pop quiz to establish how much we read… happily I scored well, getting 13.5 out of 10 (the highest scorer only pipped me by .5) so I’m on the way to being an intellectual, I do at least read the [e-] paper every morning and afternoon… which means I know what the AWB is and other very important things like where the Aussies have been playing cricket in recent weeks…
Apparently this is going to be very useful…
Being a geek has its compensations when you’re a student too. I’m the only bod in the class who takes all her notes on the laptop and who is hooked into the local wireless network during class (perk#1 of being the IT girl) so I’m called upon to reference all sorts of stuff from the net during the lecture… [further proof (as if yesterday’s post wasn’t enough) that being and IT geek is a ticket to being the teacher’s/boss’ pet…] but hopefully it’s more cool than it is geeky and I won’t get ostracised by my peers (who are all apparently half my age).
Anyway, the best part of it all as that I’m exercising bits of my brain that were getting a bit dusty, and it feels awesome.
Now I just have to figure out where to find the time to actually do the assignments…

On Being the [Boss’] Pet

March 8, 2006 by

I lifted my head up above the radar.
Big Mistake…
Huge…
There are some perks in being recognized for your skills in a large work place. Being the ‘IT’ girl is good for the ego, for the self confidence. The bit I laugh about behind closed doors is that when all is said and done all I did was Google stuff, find answers, implement them, and make them work.
Gah.
The outworking of that is that now, the CEO goes direct to me, completely bypassing my boss. Bugger, there goes my buffer.
While the upside is that when a project works I get all the kudos, the down is that when the successful project sparks a whole lot of new ideas I get all the responsibility for, and the politically complicated task of, putting the brakes on the Next [Bloody] Big Thing…
Sheesh…

Seven Up

March 7, 2006 by

I have been commanded to post – and so, to a meme… because inspiration is on the wane this week… brain is fried.
Seven things to do before I kark it…
1. Have babies (hmmm, small problem of absence of suitable sperm donor/life partner yet… tick tock, tick tock)
2. Go to Asheville NC (To visit Pash)
3.Sing with a Jazz quartet to a real live audience. (Could happen.)
4. Take an award winning photograph.
5. Speak French fluently
6. Sail off into the sunset.
7. Finish writing my bloody novel (10,000 down 75,000 to go)
7 things I can’t do
1. Tolerate noise well. (Food noise in particular, gratuitous superfluous noise generally).
2. Run (genetically predisposed to avoid overexertion).
3. Avoid getting sucked into crime shows on TV (or medical ones, for that matter).
4. Help but love my nieces and nephews.
5. Wait for my wedding night.
6 Abide people who think they have nothing left to learn.
7 Eat seafood without gagging.
7 Things that attract I’m looking for in my Beloved
1. The fact that he sees way more in me than I do, and knows just how lucky he is.
2 He can tolerate how intolerant I am about noise.
3. The way he smiles at me, like we’re the only ones who know.
4. That he has broad shoulders that could carry the weight of my world with grace.
5. That he loves God more than he loves me. And loves me more because of that.
6 That he is incredible with children and always has time to stoop down into their world.
7. That he knows how to and loves to laugh and includes me in the joke.
7 things I often say.
1. “Bugger!”
2. “Pardon Me?” (looking over the top of the laptop at Flick)
3. “Well thank you”, (instead of ‘Good”)
4. “Could you turn that down please?”
5. “I rock my own world” (well, if no one else will say it… )
6. “I love you” (to my family…)
7. “Really busy” (the general response to “How’s things?” It’s true but I hate that it sounds like I’m pretending to be important or something.)
7 films I would [probably not] walk over hot coals to see again on the big screen.
1. Amelie
2. The Lord of The Rings (ALL of them)
3. Pride and Prejudice (the Colin Firth One)
4. The Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy (with Alan Rickman as Marvin)
5. Love Actually
6. Life is Beautiful
7. The Passion of the Christ
7 books I have loved.
1. Anne of Green Gables (all of them)
2. The Saturdays series by Elizabeth Enright (ok… there’s a theme… I LOVE kids/young adults books)
3. The Hobbit
4. The Early volumes of the Outlander Series by Diana Gabaldon (but getting tired of the later ones)
5. The Bible (ok, a cliche but actually it’s awesome)
6. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
7. The Barbarian Way by Erwin McManus (will revolutionise your Christian faith (if you have one!))
The End.

Sleepless in Sydney

March 5, 2006 by

In praise of drinking espresso coffee to stay awake for babysitting…

Taken at 2am … THREE HOURS after I got home…

*rolls eyes*
