Whale Watching

October 19, 2005 by

I’m not an animal freak. Don’t get me wrong, I like them and all… I get pretty amazed by the handiwork of God when I read about zebras and how cool they are and all that sort of thing. But, you know… I don’t kind of get off on animal rights. (Oh god.. there goes half my readership right?)

[insert gratuitious apology]

Anyway, I like dogs, (but nowhere near so much as her, I love bears (but you can’t keep them round the house), I’m genuinely fond of cats (they feel great curled around your feet at the end of the bed) and I actually own a goldfish (even if he really is wonky looking).

But, if there was one animal that could tip me over the edge into idiot animal lover territory it would be a marine mammal.

You know, a dolphin or a porpoise or perhaps an orca, and even though I’m not much of one for being in the water I’d love to go swimming with one (ok, perhaps not an orca).

Well, swimming with dolphins is not something on offer as a thing to do in Manly on the weekends (so far as I know) and so it’s a happy day when you go on your usual morning jaunt and can stop and watch the humpbacks have their coastal spring carnival in your own back yard.

Ok, I have to confess this isn’t a picture I took, and I wasn’t that close to the whales (there were two) but this is what I was watching… whales waving good morning.

And it was [insert superlative of choice] amazing.

Despite the fact that whales don’t bark or have bushy tails, I still have to say: I’m jealous…

Wow. Whale watching is not something I get to do, ever really. We have some nice lakes and rivers, but I’m kind of smack in the middle of a realllllly big country.

Thaat was just the most fantastic wiblog entry for making this particular Smudge smile – my face currently looks :D (only the right way up!)

I heard on the radio yesterday the whales were making an appearance up north: and I thought of you and Miss Lisa up there probably watching them!

When I did the Great Ocean Road trip, the whales were frolicking (as much as they can frolic!) off the coast. I could’ve watched all day…and did! ;-)
