The Ad You Wont see on TV in England

March 10, 2006 by

Australia – So Where The Bloody Hell Are You?
Well, talk about brou ha ha… the Brits have taken offence at a little bit of Aussie Larikinism and banned this ad from appearing in British television… Which is of course better publicity than they could have asked for, right?
You know you want to see it… so do all your poor sad English friends who are missing out… Click on the link to see what all the fuss is about…

It’s in uncut splendour at the cinema and on some billboards in the UK. The fuddy-duddies worried about upsetting old ladies during a commercial break in Coronation Street on ITV.
The advertising standards board have been roundly laughed at here. Sadly, some people still live in the 1950’s.

Well, the fuss has been a goldmine for the Tourism Board Greavsie so we’ve not been too concerned… Glad it’s still out there in the cinema… and will no doubt be doing the rounds on email.
Ironically the email hit rate of another local ad. ‘The big ad’ for Carlton Draught beer which also had the word bloody in it got such a huge hit rate on the net that the company dramatically reduced its tv coverage because it wasn’t required… millions had already seen it before it went to air!
(There you go, another piece of mindless trivia…)

I was a little confused as to what all the fuss was about until I read your comment.
I live in the 1950’s ( known as Scunthorpe round these parts) and I was not offended. But then I always have been forward.
Read your most recent post. Please send him the gurning picture. If he doesn’t appreciate the humour, he’d be a dreadful lover. xx

Thank you Cherry, I’m kicking myself for being so ticked off about it… and for being so generous as to have NOT sent the gurning picture…
As he’s not emailed me once since I sent the photo I bloody wish I had now…
    [Ed. stop using THAT word]

LOL, thanks Liz, it made the news this week that the UK had backed down… just in time for Canada to get upset…

Of course, they were upset about the ad showing unbranded beer…

    Go figure.

Hi Dee. Thought you’d be interested to hear that they showed it in the UK on More 4 the other day.

the comment that made me laugh the most was in relation to the Brits bringing us Benny Hill and then banning the word ‘bloody’ … too funny :)

I want to go to Oz even more now!

I’d not heard about the banning of the ad, but I’m not surprised. There seems to be a very different policy here between what can be shown/said in ads and what is shown/said in the programmes they intersect. Double standards!
