Theendoftheaffair

Internet romance cops a lot of flak, raised eyebrows… the gentle hmmmmm of a hesitant correspondent. You can hear it, the “Riiiiight… internet date… okaaaay.” Like there’s something about it that’s not quite genuine, slightly seedy, a bit pathetic and dare I admit it…

Desperate…

It isn’t just the people in Co-op* relationships who look askance… there are even Singulars who for whatever reason look down on the whole process… as if their singularity is somehow higher than settling for… [sharp intake of breath]

An Internet Thing.

In spite of this, millions of single people out there are signed up on God only knows how many internet dating sites hooking up, either online or in person, casually, or committedly… But for all that there’s apparently still something that’s just…

Not…Quite…Right. At least, that’s how it comes across…

That eyebrow…

That “Hmmmmmm”.

The reason I’m thinking about it is… that for the last 2 months I’ve been in the middle of…

An Internet Thing…

A thing that’s been subject to those eyebrows, and hums. Subject to concerned inquiries… Yes on some fronts subject to enthusiastic support but by no means unanimous applause. Truth is? I’m ok with that – to each his own. The Hums are usually motivated by concern for my welfare, and having concerned friends is cool…

V cool.

All the same, today, in a mutually agreeable decision, Kiwifella and I closed down the internet connection. Not without tears on either side of the Tasman, and not without a conviction that it was the right thing to do.

It was fun while it lasted, and we don’t regret it for a minute – but the course had been run and the finish line was waiting for us to have the courage to cross it.

Not all internet romancers are Axe Wielding Maniacs. Some of them are genuine guys looking for genuine girls. My heart has got away with my head before, I’m very wary these days… but I know for sure, this one?

He’s a keeper.

I’m sad it’s not me who gets to keep him but I’m glad, that for these few weeks I was a spring in his step, and he in mine. Glad that we tried it out, long distance and all and that our emails were the highlight of each other’s days. Glad that I put myself out there, gave it a shot and took the risk, the risk that this day would come.

Because unless I do I am sitting in an ivory tower waiting for the axe wielding prince to break down the door.

When maybe what he really needs is for me to leave out the key.

*Co-operative adj 1: involving the joint activity of two or more people; antonym – Singular.

Why I Love My Church

Dear Mr and Mrs Senior Pastor*

I have the incredible privilege of a preview of the 25-year book as I take my pen to the entries to proof and edit it a little – dotting the i's and crossing the t's with worship music in my ears and a heart full to overflowing with gratitude to God for you.

As I read the stories, yours and those your lives have touched, God showed up right here at my desk causing tears to spill over and me to down tools to write this short note…

Simply to say …Thank You.

Thank you for having the courage to take that journey, to take the high and narrow road… so that I could make it part of mine.

So that I could see the potential that God placed in me realised.

So that I could lose the fear of truly being who I am,

So that I could lose my fear of being a friend of sinners.

So that I could find my voice.

Thank you

With love,

Dee

Warm Turkey

August 20, 2006 by

Miss Lisa and I went on an excursion today, into unknown territory…
Way
Out
West…
Ok, it’s way out west if you look at the difference between Manly and Auburn, but there are actually westier places out there…
Anyway, we went for Turkish food and to meet up with Ian for long overdue wibsite catch up.
It’s actually a really good thing to do. To get out of your geographical comfort zone. We see so much on the telly about the war in the Middle East and the vitriol that’s being poured out by outspoken clerics of a faith not my own, and it has a tendency to make one wary of the parts of town one goes to. And it makes me crazy, because it so isn’t necessary to be afraid. It isn’t necessary to stay away because of hyped up news stories.
I love this city, and while I may disagree with the worldview of our mid eastern neighbours I love that within 40 minutes of my White Bread neighbourhood I can go out for authentic Turkish food, baklava and apple tea that wouldn’t be out of place in Istanbul.
So, if you’re in Sydney, head to Mado Cafe on Auburn Road. (or in Brisbane or Melbourne) And if you’re not? Go somewhere else this week for dinner… somewhere you wouldn’t normally go, I challenge you to live a little bigger than you usually do!
And when the mairtre’d asks you “what brought you to our neck of the woods”?
Tell them Deeleea sent you.
