Cedar Pretty Little Decoration… Isn’t it Pretty?

December 7, 2005 by

decoration2.gifThis is an import from Israel. It’s made out of cedar and while it may be more politically correct to hope that it is from a renewable forest I just love it because it comes from the Holy Land, and even more so because it was a gift from my sister.

‘Sis and her then boyfriend (Scotch) spent some time travelling Europe and the Middle East when they were younger. The met at church, I can’t remember if I introduced them actually but I do remember that I went out with him first…

[hears audible intake of breath]

Actually, I was never that into him, I was probably more into him than I should have been simply because he was the only single bloke at youth group but in the grand scheme of things he made a much better match with ‘Sis than he ever did with me.

We went out twice, once to the races (Iwon all that he lost – he still brings it up occasionally!), and then we went to movies. It was nice but there was no spark… So, sorry there’s no more drama in the whole situation than that!!

He proposed to her on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem and so the decoration means even more. They’ve been married now for almost 10 years (I think)… man time flies…

‘Sis and Scotch are parents… this little chap is their latest… This picture makes me want to weep for wishing to give him a cuddle… His big brother turned 2 on Monday… such little treasures and they, and their cousins are the biggest magnet I have in New Zealand.

Tag Day

I’m it… Here’s the gig…The meme is called the Random Five- so I’m writing 5 random facts about Dee… yeah like I don’t blurt on enough – I’ll try and write something you don’t already know!!! Anyway… Fi dobbed me in and who am I not to take up a challenge?

So,

Fact one – I hate listening to people eat. So much so that at times I get so wigged out about it I could actually throw up… It’s worst when I’m tired and most of the time I have it pretty much under control and it doesn’t affect me when I’m participating in the meal (in case you were worried about meeting up for dinner…) Actually my whole hate relationship with noise is pretty much why I can’t wait to move into an office… staying in an open plan workspace could turn me into a homicidal maniac…

Fact two – I once read a whole string of Kay Scarpetta (by Patricia Cornwell) novels in a stretch. Reading so many like that was so disturbing that I haven’t read one since.

Fact three – I had orthodonture when I was 10 years old… that was pretty young.

Fact four – When I turned 31 I finally bit the bullet and had the cartilidge at the top of my right ear pierced. It hurt for 3 months but it was totally worth it… I love it!

Fact five – I am going to be on holiday for a whole month from Christmas to the end of January… Bring It ON

Oh yeah – Five Victims

Hurry Down the Chimney

December 5, 2005 by

This little guy is from a set that once had twelve assorted Christmas decorations, the first set I ever bought once I had moved out of home. I seem to recall that they were purchased from a hawker who was soliciting for sales at the bank I was working for at the time… It was either that or mail order from Ezibuy!

They were cheap, anyway!

I moved out of home when I was 18, young I know… Not only was I an independent girl – but being without a car and working in town made travelling from the farm to work on my bike a long distance cycle race against the clock in the morning. I got tired of it very quickly… These days the benefits to my upholstery would be manifold but back then I cared less and hated biking more.

I had the opportunity to move into a house on my great-aunt’s property with a girl and her brother neither of whom were people I knew. So iIt was challenging living away from home for the first time and living with strangers but we managed well enouth, and it actually wasn’t long before they moved out to pastures greener (and houses newer) and one of my school chums moved in.

One of the most enduring memories of that time was of my pet cockatiel Boyd.

I came home one afternoon to find the lawnmower sitting in the middle of a half mown lawn, all the doors of the house open and not a soul in sight. I noticed quickly enough that the birdcage was open and the bird either invisible or escaped, so, I wandered off out the back and up toward my aunt’s house (it was a large block of land, around 4.5 hectares). Still seeing no one I started to get a little on the worried side!! I believe may have heard a bit of swearing (or at least some exclamations) and turned to look at the Macrocarpa hedge lining the boundary between neighbouring properties and lo and behold my flatmate Steve was high (probably 12 metres) up in the tree with the bird just waiting for him to come get him.

Boyd was as tame as they come so Steve picked him up shoved him under his jumper and climbed back down the tree. He was sweating bullets though. It was the most discomposed I’d ever seen him! The escape was all his fault and he was dead scared of telling me he’d lost my pride and joy (with good reason!).

Still, I guess all’s well that ends well… though he (Steve) was very subdued and rather helpful around the house for some weeks to follow…

Yule Love it Here

December 4, 2005 by

It is a bit unprepossesing in the grand scheme of Christmas trees I guess… There is a bit of a trad red and green theme, but no colour co-ordinated designer decorations to fit a Home Beautiful seasonal theme!! Ah well, I’m more Home Comfortable myself…
But… this tree holds a collection of decorations that recall memories, stories and events that make Christmas my favourite time of year!
Last year the tree stayed in the cupboard and the house was the poorer for it. The Count was living here over the summer and it felt a bit personal to make the house home like that while he was here. Strange but true.
But this year it’s out in all its glory and over the next little while I’m thinking I’ll let you in on some of those memories and show off the decorations that bring them back!
