In which I attend a physics lecture. On. Purpose. But get to go to Rockpool as a reward.

August 5, 2010 by Dee

Half a lifetime ago (literally, half my lifetime) I left my little old NZ for the very first time and embarked on what would be a 3 year odyssey of overseas travel and experience.  It was the best of times and it was the worst of times, but not necessarily in that order.

That is to say it was worse before it got better.

The worse was down to the efforts of the family I left NZ to go work for – and rather than tell THAT story, let’s just say, I was naive and innocent and they took advantage of that naivete and innocence.  But rescue after 3 months with these people came at the hand of Nobill and the Chairman, who have been mentioned in pages on this blog before.

Nobill and the Chairman are the salt of the earth kind of people who attended the church I took refuge in to escape my captors and I lived with them for the best part of 8 months while I absorbed American Culture and saved enough money for a round the US trip, which also is also a story for a different day.

In any case, it so happens that Nobill, in the years since I left fair US shores became a Nobel Laureate in the world of Physics – or more precisely Atomic Physics (which, if you’re anything like me, just makes Physics a whole ‘nother level of terrifying) and as a consequence he spends a fair amount of time travelling the world talking to people about Atomic Physics in the form of trapping and cooling atoms to make better atomic clocks.

I know, when you put it like that it doesn’t sound so hard.

When the Chairman told me they were coming to visit and that Nobill was visiting my university to give a talk then of course I had to go hear him! Even if it meant I didn’t understand a word… and so THIS is how I came to tweet “I am at a physics lecture (waits for the laughing to stop). Yes, by choice…”

Actually, as the Chairman had said, “when you see/hear this lecture you’ll come away thinking you actually know what he’s talking about. Until someone asks you a question… and you have nothing to back up what you think you know…”

In any case there was lots of liquid nitrogen illustrating the talk so it looked fantastic and went beyond physics lecture to physics performance…

As Nobill was a guest of the University and I was a guest of Nobill I was invited to join them for dinner after the show – and it happened that dinner was at a rather well known resto called ‘Rockpool’ – only one of the world’s top 100 restuarants bearing lots of stars and hats and the like.

We had the 8 course degustation menu, with the matched wines and it was gorgeous. But I’ll tell you all about that tomorrow.

Notes from the West Island

July 28, 2010 by

In the dim and distant past when I first embraced expatriate living in the US (Washington D.C.), I somehow came across a copy of the The Bone People by Keri Hume. It’s a novel of New Zealand and at the time it was a taste of home when I was sorely missing familiar things. America was then (and, let’s face it, still is) a strange and interesting place, and even despite all the cultural input we get from there, it is quite some distance (in every way) from the then familiar, small town New Zealand…

It has occurred to me recently that I don’t really miss those familiar things any more – a trip to a NZ supermarket recently only netted a packet of Twisties (Seriously, follow the link – it’s a 1980’s ad – memory lane for me!) which were disappointing in the extreme, and a Pinky Bar (never disappointing). But by and large, if I really want any of those old (unhealthy) favourites, I can usually find them somewhere here… Don’t get me wrong, I still LOVE Kiwiana in all its kitschy glory, but those old familiars don’t fill me with a desire to be back amongst them. They’re a nostalgic, warm memory of my heritage and my history. But they’re not so much really ME any more.

I’m thinking about these things because while I was in the airport on the way home I picked up the book I’ve just finished – Cut & Run: When the Truth is No Protection by Alix Bosco. It’s a good read, and part of that is because, like the Bone People before it, it’s written by a Kiwi and set in Auckland and Coromandel; places with which I’m thoroughly familiar.

In reading it, as before, I just loved the element of familiarity; reading street names and suburbs I know well and hearing the accent of my people in the character’s voices. But this time, in contrast to the last, while I was warmed by the connection, I wasn’t so reassured by it as I have been in the past, I’ve been trying to work out why this is so, and I’ve concluded the following.

While I identify with New Zealand in all it’s wonderful gorgeous glory – I’m no longer identified by it.

Does this mean I’m now identified by my Australian citizenship?  No, I just think I’m about more than where I’m from… unless of course you consider my ‘digital citizenship’ which raises a whole other set of ideas about identity…

:: Quick Disclaimer:: Now, before my family read this and freak out that I’m NEVER coming back – I never say never – and I LOVE NZ and that I’m from there… it’s just that, well, I’ve lived here in Sydney, in THIS part of Sydney longer than I’ve lived anywhere else… ever.::

P.S.  Of course all of the above could simply be interpreted as me not loving Cut & Run like I did the Bone People… *shrugs*

Fusspot

July 25, 2010 by

I just didn’t know how fussy I was until I couldn’t find EXACTLY the right dinner set. I’ve been looking for months, it didn’t seemed like a difficult proposition. I was in the market for a plain, white, 16 piece dinner set. I mean, how hard can it be?

But once you start looking there are variables to consider…

Stoneware or Fine Bone China? (China).

Mugs or Cups and Saucers? (Mugs – but the RIGHT ones)

Plates, with rim or without? (With is OK)

Bowls- with rim or without? (Without, thanks.)

Square or Round? (Round).

Price. Right.

I found it today at Myer.

Thank goodness.

Of course, it was the last one in the store… seems probable I’m not the only fussy one…

Teh Awesome

July 22, 2010 by

(dedicated to Kelley who IS teh Awesome in human form)

I seem to be in a peculiar zone where reading material is concerned at the moment. I am still reading Harry Potter but I’ve not been able to stop myself buying books when I see them, so I’m also actually reading Cut & Run: When the Truth is No Protection by Alix Bosco. This is unusual behaviour in that I NEVER start a book till I’ve finished its predecessor. I may need an intervention… because I’ve another new book I bought by accident sitting in the wings waiting for me to finish the Bosco (but I haven’t really started it… well, maybe just a chapter in my lunch break… Oh. Help!)

I’m listening to The Robert Ludlum Value Collection: The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum. Acutally, just the Bourne Identity to start with. Might be a bit daft given how well I know the movies but I’m interested in how much more the books flesh out the stories. When do I have time for this?? While I’m at work… it’s possible to code and listen to stories at the same time… sometimes I lose focus on the reading but the cool thing with audiobooks is that you can go back to wherever you stopped listening at the press of a button! I’m REALLY missing my iPhone at the moment or I could listen to this stuff on the bus! (That’s a story for another day).

Video of the Week – Underwater Sculpture by Jason deCairesTaylor beautiful – if a little disturbing…
